The largest of all Australian native bees, a stunning female Great Carpenter Bee is perfectly captured here in majestic flight.  Early in the season, she is a frequent visitor in the salvias and open stamen roses in our garden.  Her unmistakeable, louder than loud buzz, is part of the unique process used in sonication or buzz pollination, which many plants rely solely on.  Carpenter bees are named such for their ability to burrow into branches and timber in order to make their hideaways for the next generation.
